Chapter 18 Objectives:

18.1 Explain the breakdown in relations between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II.  Key Terms:  satellite nation, containment, Truman Doctrine, Marshal Plan, Berlin Airlift

18.2 Explain how Communists came to power in China and how the United States reacted.  Summarize the events of the Korean War.

18.3 Describe the efforts of Senator Joseph McCarthy to investigate alleged Communist influence in the United States.

18.4 Describe American and Soviet actions that caused the Cold War to spread around the world.  Summarize the impact of Sputnik and the U-2 incident on the United States.  Key terms:  brinksmanship, Eisenhower Doctrine

Chapter 19 Objectives:

19.1 Identify economic and social problems Americans faced after World War II.

19.2  Describe the changes in business and suburban lifestyle during the 1950's.  Explain the increase in consumerism in the 1950's.

19.3 Explain how television programs in the 1950's reflected middle class values.  Explain how the beat movement and rock 'n' roll music clashed with middle class values.

19.4  Explain how the white migration to the suburbs created an urban crisis.  Describe the efforts of minorities to gain equal rights and fight poverty.

Chapter 20 Objectives:

20.1  Identify the factors that contributed to Kennedy's election in 1960.  Describe the new military policy of the Kennedy administration.

20.2 Summarize the New Frontier domestic and foreign agendas.  Describe the tragic chain of events surrounding Kennedy's assination.

20.3 Summarize the goals of the Johnson's Great Society and the impact of Great Society programs. 

21.1 Describe the expansion of the civil rights movement. Trace Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's civil rights activities.  Describe the response to Plessy and Brown cases.

21.2 Describe the tactics tried by civil rights organizations to secure passage of teh Voting Rights Act.  Identify the motives fo teh 1963 March on Washington

21.3 Compare segregation in the North with segregation in the South.  Summarize the accomplishments of the civil rights movement.
